The aunt you wish you had | Jason Moran on Joan Jonas
We visited acclaimed jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran at his home in Harlem to talk with him about artist Joan Jonas’ earliest performance works, “Songdelay” (1973). Filmed with a cast of performers in downtown New York near the Hudson River, the work explores how sound travels and can be distorted. To Moran, it presents many ideas of what songs can be.
Moran and Jonas are almost like family, with close to twenty years of collaborative experience. While performing on his piano at home, he reflects on how their musical kinship has impacted his work’s purpose.
“Joan is like everything to me,” he says. “Joan listens to your stories and then she tells them back to you in another way. My ro...

The back of a Martin Wong painting unlocks the history of graffiti art | HOW TO SEE
Просмотров 80 тыс.21 день назад
This short documentary tells the unknown story of how the back of this painting got covered in graffiti. Before Martin Wong's painting "Houston Street" became part of our collection, rumors circulated about another artwork on its back. When our team replaced the stretcher, they had a chance to study a hidden piece that hadn’t been seen in over 40 years. We invited graffiti artist Sharp (Aaron G...

In "Sharpening the Scythe," one of Kollwitz’s most powerful prints, an elderly peasant woman grips the blade of her farming tool, preparing it not for cutting crops, but to take part in a revolt. Watch how Kollwitz arrived at this potent image using her confidence as a draftsman and prin...

A visit to Joan Jonas' New York loft
Просмотров 25 тыс.2 месяца назад
Visit artist Joan Jonas in her SoHo loft and enter her world of collected objects. A trailblazer of video and performance art, she began her decades-long career working in New York’s vibrant Downtown art scene of the 1960s and ’70s. Here she reflects on the city’s changing landscape, and takes us through the recurring props (mirrors, masks, and kites) and themes (play, mythology, our relationsh...

How the back of an iconic painting reveals the life it lived
Просмотров 210 тыс.3 месяца назад
What can a painting tell us about the life it’s led? Come behind the scenes to paintings conservation to discover the journey “Three Musicians,” one of Pablo Picasso’s most notable Cubist works, took, from a garage studio, through World War II, to MoMA. “The back of the painting really acts in a way like its passport. A work like this really shows you, even if it's a single artist who produces ...

This video helped so much for my art project So it’s basically wild and imaginative drawings
Amazing!
I see a person
You should do a story on new line cinema. They started out producing b- horror movies and ended up becoming a major studio with the lord of the rings franchise.
Such patience and attention to small detail! Lovely job in the end.
This was great 👍🏻

Peppiatt stated: "I didn't dare go and knock." But why not? Why couldn't Peppiatt just go and knock on Giacometti's door and talk to him? I was looking at my most recent sculptures and it was obvious thatt hey were far superior to the sculptures of Giacometti which are so embarrassingly bad, and no one really likes them, but art critics have to pretend to becuase they are obliged to just as they pretend to like de Kooning because they are obliged to. I am still waiting for Peppiatt to knock on my door but I don't think he dare knock: but it is his loss, not mine.
We were all cool at one time. My 17 year old daughter doesn't know that I used to run amok and go tagging at night, El Monte, La Puente, Pomona, Ontario, and Chino from 1988 to 1992. Stopped went i started working and my best friend was killed. Started attending The University of Phoenix. Achieved a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and now a Real Estate Broker.
A lot of post rationalization, I think.
What a difference w/o varnish. Grand picture for sure.
There are others that have done paintings that look just like this, I have even done splash paints.. not worth as much as he is getting for his paintings.
nice
This was wonderful thank you
Thank you for introducing this artist
This was an amazing conversation, that resonates exactly with what I’ve been thinking, while trying to create my own counter-narrative in the form of an app. I really hope we can balance out the destructive power of some technologies like AI, using them in favor of the creation of either big or small counter narratives.
this sounds me justifying a snapshot with a sales speech than really working on something outsanding.

man 2008-2018 was a good time for the internet
The rule was, if I have it right, that each guest gets to pick one work. Steve chose two. Given the vast amount of art at MOMA, I would like to have seen two more different styles.
logan!!! dope!!!

Beautiful. Lots of woodcuts to accompany some poems.
This is great education on the different types of fighting used in cinema and the difference between that and Kung Fu, Lau Kar Yen stood out as a master of both martial arts and fight choreography. Now I want to watch the 36 Chambers of Shaolin again!
Europe and Russia was connected through Symbolism into the avante Garde the Russian collectors owned the European works.Theosophy and the Red Cross salons all connect.
Martin knew what he was doing, it is so fitting for a piece of graffiti to be on the back side of a painting of a roll down gate. A roll down gate goes with graffiti like butter on bread, it just makes sense. Sure, maybe he did need a canvas to paint this gate on but I have to imagine he had some intention behind choosing that specific canvas with Sharp's piece on it. Interesting too that Sharp's piece is intentionally dissed by Delta2.
red hue colour looks like pizza sauce
It's a shame this piece couldn't be displayed to have both sides visible...
Thank youi!
that some American Asian Culture that I just learn today that intertwine in the Art Culture
I've been painting for 15 years, im 30 now. And the feeling i get when i see videos like this is so much happiness and sadness at the same time. I got at 14 yr old and a 1 yr old. I hope that one day they realize how much love i got for them and this art forum, and I pray they dont forget me or resent me for it. 💔
Wow I cant belive The Museum of modern art's tutorial shows canvas stretching with all the staples showing. How lazy and unprofessional.
✨✨💞

U can use silk worm cacoons for finger tip plasters, when empty, ideal for needle work at your tips ,
Great video ! What's going to happen to the Aerosol Art Masterpiece that was also with thr metal gate that reads sharp and delta2 ? Is the museum going to print that on Canvas and exhibit it with Credits to both Aerosol Artists as well .
Va bene. Ognuno la pensi come gli pare. Per me però il re è nudo. E queste "opere" testimoniano solo la vocazione al nulla di un occidente ormai giunto al capolinea.
Very , very interesting, thank you so much 😮
This was well done. Whiten was a true genius with God given talent.
I wasn't aware of Martin Wong or his art until seeing this, thank you for introducing me to him!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Y would anyone want to paint like someone else?!
Damn this was a cool video
In all honesty, you can look at a pile of dirt and it will show something different to all people. This art is trash.
Amazing over 10” years old ❤
1:09:40 ... Okay, but how far back do you want to go--an eye for any eye, etc... What about HIS domination, and so on, and so forth???!!!
Enjoyed your video, but I don't know what to make of your comment about Kusama. There are various ways of reading a title and perhaps the whole point of this one may just be that because F isn't a number it stands apart when it is thought of as such.
